ANXIETY

Difficult childhood experiences can also result in anxiety. Although it’s normal to worry or feel nervous sometimes especially when you are dealing with a stressful situation when anxiety is more permanent and impacts everyday activities such as work, school, or relationships it becomes more of a concern.

Anxiety is a common mental health issue in the US with 18% of the adult population likely to experience it together with 25% of adolescents. The LGBTQ community is 3 times more likely than the general population to struggle with something like anxiety.

There are various different ways anxiety shows up, for example, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, and Social Anxiety Disorder.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder

With generalized anxiety disorder, you experience excessive anxiety or worry for months as well as several of the following:
  • Feeling restless, keyed up, or on edge
  • Being easily fatigued
  • Difficulty concentrating or your mind going blank
  • Irritability
  • Muscle tension
  • Difficulty falling or staying asleep, restlessness, or unsatisfying sleep
Panic Disorder
With panic disorder, you experience recurrent unexpected panic attacks when you have a sudden surge of intense fear together with maybe your heart pounding, sweating, trembling or shaking, shortness of breath, or feeling as if you are choking or being smothered or, or feeling as if you are dying.  After at least one of the panic attacks, you constantly worry about having another panic attack, or you go to great lengths to try to avoid having another panic attack.

Social Anxiety Disorder
With social anxiety disorder, for at least six months you have a marked fear or anxiety about social or performance situations when you are afraid you might be embarrassed, judged, humiliated, rejected or that you will offend others. You either avoid these situations or endure them with intense fear or anxiety that is out of proportion to the actual situation.

Therapy Can Help...

When anxiety is linked to trauma it requires specialized treatment.  The approaches I use such as
EMDR, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy or Internal Family Systems are tailored to treat the effects of trauma.
